State game farm accepting applications for 2011 Pheasant Chick Program

POYNETTE, Wis. – Wisconsin conservation clubs have until March 5 to apply to participate in a program where clubs help the Department of Natural Resources rear pheasant chicks from the State Game Farm for later release on public and private hunting lands.

The Cooperative Day-old Chick Program has been in place since 1936 to increase opportunities for pheasant hunting across the state. Under the program, cooperating conservation clubs are provided day-old rooster pheasant chicks hatched at the State Game Farm near Poynette. In return, the clubs agree to cover all costs related to rearing, feeding, maintaining and properly caring for the pheasant chicks.   Read more...
Timber Wolf Tracking and Ecology Clinic - Feb. 19-20

BABCOCK, Wis. – People interested in learning more about gray wolf ecology can attend a Timber Wolf Ecology Clinic at the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19-20.

Area biologists and volunteers from the Timber Wolf Information Network have teamed up to provide instruction on aspects of wolf ecology, including status, population biology and field study techniques. Saturday afternoon will be spent outdoors exploring wolf habitat.   Read more...
Leftover spring turkey permits go on sale March 21, 2011

MADISON – Remaining permits for the 2011 spring turkey hunting season will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting March 21. Leftover permits will be first issued for sale by zone, one zone per day, with each zone having a designated sales date.

Wisconsin DNR reports a preliminary tally of 218,144 deer kill with no firearm-related deaths...

A survey of Wisconsin deer registration stations conducted by the state Department of Natural Resources has yielded a preliminary tally of 218,144 for the just-ended, nine-day November gun deer hunt, an 11 percent increase over the 2009 nine-day season. The opener was highlighted by good hunting conditions on opening day and no firearm-related fatalities for only the second time on record.   Read more...
Deer Kill up 6.3% for Wisconsin's Opening Weekend

Hunters killed slightly more deer during the first two days of Wisconsin’s November gun season, an encouraging sign for hunters still upset with last year’s weak harvest. Hunters killed 106,404 deer on Saturday and Sunday, according to a preliminary Department of Natural Resources survey of registration stations.   Read more...
